THE PROBLEM
Rocket Lawyer's legal advice application was used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. It was built with Ionic, and a new React Native successor was on the way.
A rewrite like this has one hard constraint: the existing app cannot stop. Users keep arriving, issues keep needing fixes, and the team building the successor cannot pretend the current product does not exist.
Legal advice is also a domain where people arrive with something important at stake. The app has to work when they open it.
WHAT WE BUILT
We did both jobs. We maintained the Ionic application in production and, in parallel, developed its React Native successor.
Running two generations of an app at once is a practical exercise in cross-platform mobile app development: keeping one stable while the next one takes shape. We wrote up what we learned in Ionic to React Native migration lessons.
OUTCOME
The Ionic app kept serving its worldwide user base while the React Native successor was developed.
